Tim qualified in medicine at King’s College London in 1983 and worked as a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal Free Hospital in London for nearly 20 years. 

He developed an interest in medical leadership and management and has held management posts, including clinical director, divisional director and medical director, at the Royal Free Hospital. 

In 2012, he moved from medical practice into full-time management, as chief executive of Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Hospitals Trust, until its 2014 acquisition. 

Subsequently, Tim worked as associate medical director at the NHS Trust Development Authority, before moving to Barts Health NHS Trust in east London, firstly as improvement director and subsequently as its Deputy Chief Executive. 

In addition, Tim consults for companies in the medical information technology industry and is also deputy chair of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
